Kitcheners is an iconic Martinborough institution offering good, honest, simple, kiwi food that has been going since 1997 as a classic kiwi dairy and tearooms.
The new branding takes inspiration from New Zealand dairies and classic signage that feels nostalgic for our childhoods while offering a nod to the history of Kitcheners and ensuring the branding reflects the family owned local hangout that greets you with the friendliest service and quality, classic kiwi food.
The logo has been designed with a flowing script style font that reflects casual, nostalgic sign writing of the past. It has drawn inspiration from the past but executed in a modern way that creates a distinct identity that evokes the emotions of friendly, honest and reliable. The handwritten, flowing style offers a nostalgic touch, while the extended drop shadow makes it feel contemporary and like it belongs in the street on signage. We added the tagline Tea Rooms to hold onto the roots of the brand and ensure people know it’s a causal, relaxed atmosphere for socialising and unwinding.
The colour palette is inspired by vintage sign writing, selecting modern, bright and vibrant colours. It feels positive, fun and cheerful with a nod to nostalgia.
We designed a set of fun posters that express the brands sense of humour and captures what Kitcheners is all about in a hand crafted, vintage style that perfectly captures the nostalgic tea rooms feel. We came up with the saying ‘Darling let the good times sausage roll’. Darling expresses the typical greeting you get from the girls at Kitcheners and then we playfully speak to the great quality, honest, kiwi food you get at Kitcheners. ‘I laughed so hard tears ran down my leg’ is all about having a really good laugh and ‘Maybe coffee is addicted to me’ is a playful twist on peoples coffee addictions. Finally we crafted ’99 problems but Kitcheners ain’t one’ to speak to the reliability and consistency of service and food. We used a selection of retro signage inspired typefaces and decorative elements to bring the posters to life and offer the retro vintage signage feel.
The menus capture the feel of tea rooms through decorative vintage graphics sitting behind headings that use a mix of retro, sign writing fonts.
We also illustrated a fun supporting graphic of a coffee cup and bacon sandwich to playfully celebrate Kitcheners fabulous coffee and food offering in a fun and casual way that also expresses the unique attitude of Kitchener’s girls.
We developed branding design, illustration, posters, menus, advertising, t-shirts and signage.
