Client: Rathkeale College
Rathkeale College have three houses Halberg, Blake and Hillarythese houses are based on inspiring New Zealanders, who each evoke key characteristics that Rathkeale wanted captured in house emblems.
Hillary needed to evoke Conquering, Endeavor and Humble. The flag gives the feeling of conquering, pioneering and success. We added an H to reinforce the Hillary house. Endeavor for us was the mountain to see the challenge to strive and aim to the top. As well as the obvious with Hillary first to climb everest. Humbleness we really thought the holding shape gave this idea of the medal ribbon, one that you wear close to your chest without boasting.
Blake evokes leadership, unity and brotherhood. We captured leadership by using the points of a compass (finding your way) with our different points from the graphics ie. star North, Bottom anchor South, and then the 2 Notches in the sides. Also the southern cross ties into leadership and the maritime feel for navigation as sailors used the stars to know positioning on the high seas. The Southern Cross also ties in to New Zealand. The circle shows unity and an unbreakable bond. Brotherhood also sits into the unity theme. The Anchor we felt was a great symbol to use as it keeps you sturdy in rough seas and also feels strong in character.
Halberg evokes Service, Fortitude/Perseverance and humility. We created a holding shape based on a shield which represents awards in the service of athletics, the hand holding the torch represents strength, perseverance & fortitude with a strong link to the olympics which reflects perseverance & humility.
These emblems created a strong family of icons that the students and teachers could wear with pride, inspiring them like the great names they’re wearing on their chests.
