A shinning star
Client: Martinborough Star
Project: Newspaper design and layout
The Martinborough Star is the local paper, which comes out once a month, offering 100% local news for Martinborough and the surrounding areas. The wonderful David, Mike and Jazz have been producing this newspaper for over 5 years, all on a volunteer basis, because they have a strong desire to help their community. Jazz decided to hand over the production reigns, and we stepped up, being able to offer our design experience and desire to do our bit for the community.
We began with re designing the paper, which hadn’t changed since it’s birth. We wanted to modernize the look, bring in more white space and make it easier to read. We changed the heavy rainbow header, bringing in new fonts, teaser text to key stories, a changeable clear cut pic showing icons of the region.
We introduced a new grid system and paragraph styles, reducing the extra large font size, which gave us space to introduce pull quotes, highlighted by large speech marks, which contrasts beautifully with the light weight font. The inside front cover has regular features, so we introduced a simple black and white look, removing the cartoon graphics, cleaning it up, adding distinctive headers and dividing lines. We introduced page three as another feature story, after the cover story to bring in a large photo, intro and pull quote text and plenty of white space.
We work with local advertisers, and co-ordinate the production of advertising, through to juggling all articles to layout each issue and get the files off to print, all on a tight turn around.
